Let's help the band!

As a fundraiser for the band, the Hueytown High School Band Boosters are creating a cookbook to commemorate the new high school and celebrate the city of Hueytown's 50th anniversay. They have collected many recipes from graduates and other city residents.  The boosters are now collecting  memorabilia, ads and orders.  They would love to have your help with the project.

To help you can:
     -  provide memorabilia and/or a short story or fact with
a picture that provides information about Hueytown
history and its people and businesses
     -  purchase an ad for the cookbook,
     -  purchase a memorial page for the cookbook, and
     -  purchase a cookbook when completed.   Delivery is
        planned for November/December 2010.

All profits from the sale of the cookbooks will benefit the Hueytown High School Band .  They will enable the band  to purchase equipment for the new stadium concessions, new uniforms, along with other equipment needed for the band room that will not be provided with the new school.

Deadlines: Memorabilia received by 7/15/10; Ads and Memorial pages received by 8/15/10

A big thank you to Your Express Car Wash for the Teacher Appreciation package!

A big 'Thank You' is in order to David Miles of Your Express Car Wash!  To recognize the hard work of our community's teachers in May, David worked with other local businesses and provided an Appreciation package to each teacher and staff of our local schools.

The package consisted of  the items from our Chamber members:
-   Your Express Car Wash of Hueytown donated a free car wash,
-   Iron Works Gym of Hueytown donated 3 day gym passes,
-   Texaco Xpress Lube of Hueytown donated School System Employee Discount Cards, and  another local business,  Zaxby's of Hueytown,  donated coupons for a 'Buy 1 get 1' free chicken specials.

This was greatly appreciated by the teachers and staff along with the Chamber.  Please visit each of the businesses and let them know how much you appreciate them for their recognition of our schools and having their business in Hueytown.  Remember - Shop Hueytown First!

Its Storm season - be prepared

With the earthquakes and floods recently reported, it makes one think of our own disaster preparations - both for our home and our business.   Since we are in Tornado Season and coming upon Hurricane Season, its time to dust off our emergency preparations.  If you haven't prepared in the past, it is something to consider for this season.

Don't really know where to start?  Think about storage of important papers and being self sufficient for up to 3 days (72 hours).  There are plenty of online sites to help you think through your needs.

The State of Alabama Emergency Management Agency site contains a wealth of information to help you develop a plan and provide direction.  Also, see the Department of Homeland Security's site:  Ready America.    The FEMA site also provides detailed disaster preparation information.    And lastly, but certainly not the least, is disaster prepardness information from SCORE (source of free and confidential small business advice for entrepreneurs). SCORE is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

Keep in mind, you don't need to go to a great expense or buy special kits and items.  All items and services you need to make preparations are available locally from our Hueytown Area Chamber of Commerce members!

See Allen Antonio of Hueytown Hardware for materials/boxes, any of our financial members to obtain a safety deposit box to hold your important papers and keepsakes (Alabama Telco, 1st Federal, 1st Financial Bank, Peoples Bank), food and water supplies (Food Giant, Publix) along with medical and other everyday supplies (Pharmacy Express, Weldon's Pharmacy).
