"Hey, batter, batter - swing!"
What does this tell you? Beautiful blue sky, bright white pants, crisp red and blue jerseys with a team name on the front and player numbers on the back. Need more? Crack of the bat, screaming crowd and smiling kids going around the bases. Got it now? Yes! Its the start of another ball season in 'Bama and for the Achiever's League!
If you are in the market for watching great baseball, or would like to run the bases once again as a Buddy - come out this spring to the Pleasant Grove Sports complex on Saturday mornings. There you will find two teams that have played ball in a league for approximately 17 years. Of course the players and coaches have changed over time, but the mission is the same - provide an opportunity for all kids to play ball. It is a fabulous league - the Achiever's League. This league is for challenged children primarily from the Western Jefferson County area. But everyone is welcome to play and make some new friends. It is fantastic!
What is a Buddy? Someone who helps players round the bases. What are the requirements to be a Buddy? Be at least 12 years old; dedicated to playing games on Saturday mornings between 10 AM and 12 noon through May. Students - if you need community hours this is a great opportunity for you. The time you participate with the Achiever's League will be documented and provided to your counselor or sponsor.
Funding for the teams, equipment, park and uniforms are through donations. A big thank you to Alabama Power, Elks Lodge - Bessemer and Bobby Humphryes for making kids dreams come true!

Duck season is on us! Okay, not the OFFICIAL Alabama duck season but the Alabama Rubber Duck Race season. Join us in supporting the Hueytown Boys & Girls Club of Central Alabama by participating in the Alabama Duck Race. All proceeds go to the BGCCA. The BGCCA - Hueytown is not only a fantastic supporter of the Hueytown Area Chamber of Commerce, but is also a fabulous resource for our area.
This is great family entertainment and it is so easy to participate! You adopt an individual or a flock of ducks in advance of the race. Adoptions begin at $ 5 per duck. Then come watch your duck race against others on May 1st at Alabama Adventure. You will be in the running to win a $ 5,000 grand prize or one of 7 other prizes ranging from gift cards to a romantic weekend at the Hoover Embassy Suites.
You can complete a duck adoption application online or pick up an adoption form at the Hueytown branch of the Alabama Telco Credit Union. So get quackin' - help us raise awareness and provide youth afterschool and summer programs at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Alabama.
