Its Storm season - be prepared
With the earthquakes and floods recently reported, it makes one think of our own disaster preparations - both for our home and our business. Since we are in Tornado Season and coming upon Hurricane Season, its time to dust off our emergency preparations. If you haven't prepared in the past, it is something to consider for this season.
Don't really know where to start? Think about storage of important papers and being self sufficient for up to 3 days (72 hours). There are plenty of online sites to help you think through your needs.
The State of Alabama Emergency Management Agency site contains a wealth of information to help you develop a plan and provide direction. Also, see the Department of Homeland Security's site: Ready America. The FEMA site also provides detailed disaster preparation information. And lastly, but certainly not the least, is disaster prepardness information from SCORE (source of free and confidential small business advice for entrepreneurs). SCORE is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
Keep in mind, you don't need to go to a great expense or buy special kits and items. All items and services you need to make preparations are available locally from our Hueytown Area Chamber of Commerce members!
See Allen Antonio of Hueytown Hardware for materials/boxes, any of our financial members to obtain a safety deposit box to hold your important papers and keepsakes (Alabama Telco, 1st Federal, 1st Financial Bank, Peoples Bank), food and water supplies (Food Giant, Publix) along with medical and other everyday supplies (Pharmacy Express, Weldon's Pharmacy).

"Hey, batter, batter - swing!"
What does this tell you? Beautiful blue sky, bright white pants, crisp red and blue jerseys with a team name on the front and player numbers on the back. Need more? Crack of the bat, screaming crowd and smiling kids going around the bases. Got it now? Yes! Its the start of another ball season in 'Bama and for the Achiever's League!
If you are in the market for watching great baseball, or would like to run the bases once again as a Buddy - come out this spring to the Pleasant Grove Sports complex on Saturday mornings. There you will find two teams that have played ball in a league for approximately 17 years. Of course the players and coaches have changed over time, but the mission is the same - provide an opportunity for all kids to play ball. It is a fabulous league - the Achiever's League. This league is for challenged children primarily from the Western Jefferson County area. But everyone is welcome to play and make some new friends. It is fantastic!
What is a Buddy? Someone who helps players round the bases. What are the requirements to be a Buddy? Be at least 12 years old; dedicated to playing games on Saturday mornings between 10 AM and 12 noon through May. Students - if you need community hours this is a great opportunity for you. The time you participate with the Achiever's League will be documented and provided to your counselor or sponsor.
Funding for the teams, equipment, park and uniforms are through donations. A big thank you to Alabama Power, Elks Lodge - Bessemer and Bobby Humphryes for making kids dreams come true!

Don't forget the Census
Time to do our civic duty and respond to the Census. This happens once every 10 years and is helpful to our community. How is it helpful? The data is used to determine the number of Congressional representatives for our area. If the census data is under-reported, we can lose representation in Washington D.C.
Hopefully you received the short Census form in the mail. That form contains 10 questions and is easy to complete. Be sure to return it by April 1 (yes, April Fool's Day! - maybe they should have chosen April the 2nd). If it isn't returned by April 1st, you will probably receive another form or possibly a visit from a Census taker. Visits are scheduled to begin in May.
If someone does come to your door and claims to be a census taker, you can verify their authenticity by calling 1-866-226-2864. Please keep in mind a census taker will NEVER: ask to enter your home, or ask for your Social Security / Bank information. They must have an official ID from the U.S government.
Call 1-866-226-2864 if you have questions about whether any communications you receive came from the Census Bureau. Bear in mind, email will not be used to collect Census data. If you received a suspicious letter in the mail, please report it to the to U.S. Postal Inspection Service: 877-876-2455.
And lastly, here is a link from the Census site regarding census fraudulent activity and scams.
